Cultivating self-compassion

If you spoke to your best friend the way you speak to yourself, would you still be friends?

If your best friend says to you, “I screwed up” or “I embarrassed myself,” do you tell her what a loser she is, that she’ll never get it right, and she might as well give up? I bet not. But what if the one who messed up is you? For many of us, the response can be brutal. “I can’t believe you did that! What’s wrong with you? I bet they’re all talking about what an idiot you are.”

My younger sister confided to me (she shared it on a previous blog post, so I’m sure she won’t mind if I repeat it here) that when she gets upset or “loses it,” she often thinks, “There’s the real me.” But what if she spoke to herself like I would speak to her. “You’re human. We’ve all been there. What do you need? More sleep (a massage, chocolate, sister time….).”

I’ve been practicing friendly self-talk for a while now (practicing being the key word), but another sister recently stepped it up a notch for me. (Aren’t sisters great?) She suggested choosing a pet name that someone I love has used for me and starting the self talk that way. Our Grandma used to call her “Lovey,” so now she starts her self-encouragement with “Lovey, it’s okay….” As she said, it’s harder to beat Lovey up.

  1. This is so true. Why is self compassion so hard? I truly believe if we love ourselves we will be better at loving and giving to others, but like most people I beat myself up way to often. My pampering these days is getting my nails done regularly-and I love it!

  2. Sleep is big for me, because I really don’t get enough. Lately, if I’m not coping as well as I’d like I ask myself, “Lovey, what do you need?” The answer is often just to close my eyes for 20 minutes.

    My worst self talk is body related. I find it hard to love my extra 20lbs until I can love it away. Suggestions?

    1. Sleep is huge for me too. If I don’t get enough sleep, I don’t eat right, think clear, feel gratitude. Every challenge seems momentous if I’m tired. I set a goal over a year ago to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. I’ve done pretty well–and it’s helped. I could actually use eight hours, but so far I haven’t been able to make that happen.

      As far as body image, I’m with you on that one too. When I catch myself complaining about my body, I remind myself how much it’s done for me. For example, if I’m thinking my thighs are too big, I tell them how grateful I am for all the running they do and just getting me around everyday. Lovey, your body’s been through a lot and kept on going. That’s pretty amazing!

    1. I haven’t found one that feels just right yet. Grandma always said I was her sunshine; maybe that should be it. I know what it’s NOT–Granny Panty! Thanks, Wellsy Smellsy, for that one.
