Friday favorites: unusual songs from my running playlist

It’s Friday again! How time flies when you have a short work week. Since I’ve already shared the items that would usually make up my Friday Favorites, I’m going to do something a little different this week. Today, I’m going to share with you the unusual songs on my running playlist. (I’m sure you’ve been dying to know this!) I, of course, have many of the typical hard-hitting, fast-moving workout tunes, but these are songs that I’ve included in my playlist, not for their motivating beats (though some do have that), but for the way they make me feel—more specifically for the way they distract my brain from my body’s pain.

  1. You Always Make Me Smile, Kyle Andrews (because, well, it always makes me smile)
  2. Grafton Street, Dido (because it reminds me of my final days with my father, for some reason)
  3. The Day Before the Day, Dido (because it makes me emotional to my core, even if it is sad)
  4. Running Free, Iron Maiden (because it reminds me of my deceased brother—in a happy, carefree way)
  5. I Run for Life, Melissa Etheridge (because it’s about running and life and stuff)

Then there are the songs that friends and family have suggested, which means whenever they come up in the shuffle, I think of that person. Here is just a sampling of those:

  1. Uptown Funk, Mark Ronson and featuring Bruno Mars (my Aunt Sheri)
  2. Attitude, Wynonna Judd (my sister Cindy)
  3. It’s a New Day, will.i.am (my daughter Ashley)
  4. My Body, Young the Giant (my friend Emily)
  5. Cake by the Ocean, DNCE (my niece Liz)
  6. American Idiot, Green Day (my husband Larry)

  1. Well way to go. You made me cry (twice) before 10 AM. I hadn’t heard the two songs by Dido so I listened to them. I don’t often cry but I guess a good cry is healthy for the soul.❤️

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one! Just imagine what people at the gym must think when I’m running with tears streaming down my face. 🙂 You should check out the full album, Safe Trip Home. All the songs are not sad, by the way.

  2. I am struggling to get my music to sync between my new Samsung phone, my old iPhone and my iPad. Seems that if I have purchased this music, I should be able to listen to it anywhere or any device. Will get it figured out!

Love the idea of having a running play list. I am not familiar with many of your songs, but I love Cake by the Ocean and anything Dido. Why did she disappear? Going to make a running play list for myself. And a house cleaning play list because that’s what I am doing all next week.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Good luck syncing Leslie. I’d offer advice, but I have no tech skills whatsoever. I wonder what happened to Dido too. I’d love to hear what songs end up on your playlist.
