My EMPOWERED playlist

If you asked me what my favorite genre of music is, Iโ€™d probably say classic rock or 70s music. I enjoy the Rolling Stones, Carole King, Fleetwood Mac, Simon & Garfunkel, and James Taylorโ€ฆto name a few.ย

However, when I compiled a playlist for my last Word of the Year, EMPOWERED, I discovered that the songs that are the most empowering for me are a completely different group.ย

Woman listening to music and flexing muscles.

Hereโ€™s what my EMPOWERED playlist looks like

  • Fight Song, Rachel Platten
  • Glorious, Macklemore and Skylar Grey
  • I am Invincible, Cassadee Pope
  • Brave, Sara Bareilles
  • Raise your Glass, Pink
  • So What, Pink
  • American Idiot, Green Day
  • The Edge of Glory, Lady Gaga
  • Born this Way, Lady Gaga
  • Flowers, Miley Cyrus
  • Unwritten, Natasha Bedingfield
  • You Learn, Alanis Morisette
  • Since U Been Gone, Kelly Clarkson

Some of the songs are obvious; the lyrics are empowering. For some others, itโ€™s more about the music and the energy it gives me. I donโ€™t try to analyze it too much. When I hear a song that infuses me with a feeling of strength and energy, I add it to the list.

Your turn

  1. What song always leaves you feeling empowered?
  2. What is your favorite genre of music?
  3. What else is on your mind? Anything at all; I just love to hear from you.

  1. When I used to go to the gym, some of these songs were on my list, tooโ€”I’d add Katy Perry’s Eye of The Tiger, Miley Cyrus’ The Climb, Ricki-Lee’s Don’t Miss You, Backstreet Boys’ Larger Than Life, Imagine Dragon’s It’s Time, and Moving Picture’s Never. Plus heaps more!

  2. Hi Christie – I hadn’t heard of most of these – I guess I don’t live a very empowered life these days ๐Ÿ˜€ I tend to listen to the music you listed in your intro when I have something playing in the background (which isn’t that often). I’m not at the gym, and my walks are completely disconnected from anything other than creation and the creator. I listened to Glorious and the clip that went with it was fabulous – loved the granny! And I do love Miley Cyrus’s Flowers song (and I’m a huge Swiftie these days – oh the shame…… ๐Ÿ˜€ )

    1. Hi Leanne. I unplug when I’m walking outdoors too. I love the sounds of nature. The clip with Macklemore’s grandmother was what first sucked me into Glorious. I always picture her when I hear this song. And I say listen to whoever makes you smile…even if it is Taylor Swift! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Hi Christie, I love all the music you listed first up but I’m not surprised really at the songs you chose that help EMPOWER you – those are great songs! I’d be happy with those on my playlist to empower me too. The only other songs that come to mind are ‘Girl on Fire’ by Alicia Keys and ‘Roar’ by Katie Perry. Oh – I am woman by Helen Reddy! Thanks for linking up with #WWWhimsy – best wishes for a fabulous week! xo

  4. I admit my age and interest in music means I cannot comment on yours!
However, I am a great CAR singer when I am solo and off to something challenging…which was, for years, my surgeries and treatments for oral cancer.
I ended up making a playlist I called Heart and Hope. I found the song from Damn Yankees really motivated me to find the courage I needed (and I still play it from time to time) and Hope came in the form of a Wonderful World.
Take care, and loved this post.
    Denyse.

    1. We have CAR singing in common, Denyse. I love Heart and Hope as a playlist. I can see how that would help you through challenging times. I hope you have a wonderful week.

  5. Christie, Some of the songs on your list are also on my list. When I am bike, hike or jog outdoors, I listen to the sounds in nature. Have a wonderful week!

  6. I have no playlists. I know, I know, that is weird, but I am happy listening to SiriusXM. I pick a channel that is a genre, like 80s rock or soft jazz, then just groove along. My feeling of empowerment isn’t about specific songs, it’s about the overall vibe. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

  7. Interesting Christie, I don’t have an empowered playlist – the only ones I’ve set up are a split between upbeat and restful. That said, I don’t go to the gym or run, so I’m not looking to power through things. I’m not really a pumped up music type – more into laid back stuff. My favourite genres are jazz, blues, bluegrass, latin…

    1. That makes sense, Debs. I have a restful playlist I’ve titled “Rainy Day.” I’ve been experimenting a little lately listening to different genres of music, just to see if there is something I’ve been missing out on. ๐Ÿ˜

  8. I RUN FOR LIFE and THIS IS NOT GOODBYE by Melissa Ethridge are two empowering songs to me. They were both on the album you gave me while I was battling cancer. So thanks for that. ๐Ÿ™
