Finding quiet in the storm

There is a lot of noise in the world right now, so when I found this poem that spoke to me, I immediately wanted to share it with you.

May you find your personal quiet in the storm.

Man sitting on the beach in a storm.

Find Your Quiet in the Storm

Some days, the world feels too sharp,
Too loud, too raw to touch.
Headlines scream, phones ring,
And chaos dances at our doorstep.

But I’ve learned to find sanctuary
In small moments of grace—
The way sunlight paints shadows on walls,
How wind whispers through leaves,
The steady rhythm of my own breath
When I remember to just… breathe.

I’ve learned to turn off the noise,
To silence the endless chatter,
To find strength in gentle things—
A cup of coffee at dawn,
A moment of kindness between strangers,
The quiet courage of growing things.

They say the world’s gone mad,
But perhaps the secret is knowing
When to step away from the storm,
When to guard your peace like gold,
When to let your heart be still
In a world that never stops spinning.

For in this rush of endless moments,
We must remember to be gentle
With ourselves, with each other,
To find beauty in broken places,
To create spaces of quiet wonder
In corners of our own making.

This is how we stay whole—
Not by hardening our hearts,
But by knowing when to soften,
When to rest, when to breathe,
When to let the world’s noise fade
Into the background of our being.

  1. I have a few favourite poems but not about quiet. I think it’s good to recede just a little to find strength to regroup and fight. The world is shifting in a major way and the new world order is upon us. While once great powers fall, it’s the people inside suffering that will need those that can help to step up.
But that is overwhelming at times. What’s that saying? Sometimes you hit a wall just to lean in it & rest. #WWWhimsy

  2. I love this… and it’s so appropriate right now. As Lydia said in her comment it feels as though the world as we know it is shifting. That’s deeply uncomfortable and loud.

  3. Hi Christie – that poem was beautiful – and I don’t think it applies only to times of turmoil – I find myself seeking quiet and peace and calm and centeredness every day. I’ve realized it’s just how I want to live my life – I don’t want to be part of the noise and bustle of our busy world, and it’s good to be reminded by poems like yours as to why finding sanctuary is so important for our souls.

  4. Finding my quiet in the storm…. a definite need. It feels like I just keep getting bombarded … every little thing feels like the straw breaking the camel’s back. How to alleviate the noise, find the breath? I tried a no-social-media for a few days, tried a morning in the garden pulling weeds, later today trying a massage. And yet the storm rages on….

  5. What a great idea to share this poem and your thoughts too Christie. It’s been a pretty “ordinary” and somewhat “noisy” time around this world we share hasnt it?
    Take care,
    Denyse #TeamWWWhimsy

    1. I guess you have a point, Denyse. Noisy has become ordinary, hasn’t it? I would say what is happening in the United States politically at this point is rather extraordinary…and not in a good way. At least I hope it has become the new “ordinary.”

  6. That poem is beautiful, Christie. I’ve been experiencing such a storm in my personal life, it’s been hard to pay attention to the storms elsewhere. Maybe in some ways that’s a blessing? I guess life can be hard in many ways and we need to be able find the peace and quiet within ourselves.

  7. My favorite quote is from Leonard Cohen:

“Ring the bells that still can ring,
    Forget your perfect offering.
    There’s a crack, a crack in everything,
That’s how the light gets in.”

I think of it as my quiet in the storm. Things are cracked, but maybe some light is getting in because of it? Light is good, is it not?

  8. It’s so easy to slip into a negative mindset, for there is so much to deal with both in the smallness of our own lives, and in the hugeness of the world stage. And I have found that happening to me this year as I worked through some personal stuff. But I’m ready to turn away now, and to place my focus elsewhere on more positive and life-affirming thoughts and actions. Once that mental switch happens, there’s so much which helps sweep you along – poetry, literature, music, lyrics, even memes.

Thank you so much Christie for writing this and for sharing the poem – it was much needed.

    1. You’re welcome, Debs. I’m glad it spoke to you, as it did me. Sometimes we have to sit in that negative space for a bit, but I am happy to hear that you are ready to turn away and shift focus. Wishing you all the best!
