The words we use about aging and fitness matter
Everywhere you look…whether it’s social media, television, magazines, or billboards…you see recommendations for staying strong, vibrant, and sharp as you age. Much of it is good advice. Taking care of our minds and bodies is important if we want to live long, happy, engaged lives.

What I find concerning is some of the language that is commonly used. Do we really need to fight old age, stop the clock, or battle Father Time? This makes it seem as if getting older is something negative or shameful…something to avoid or overcome.
In truth, aging means you are doing something right, and it is a privilege not given to all. What if we started talking about optimizing health, embracing wisdom and experience, working with Father Time?
And while we’re on the subject of words related to aging, I much prefer the term elder to elderly. Elders sound like people to be respected and admired. Elderly sounds like you’re fading and frail.
That’s my rant for the day. What about you? Are there words or phrases related to age that get under your skin?
