Thank you notes: little bits of gratitude from February 2022

It’s easy to get so caught up in the hustle of life that we forget to appreciate the small miracles that happen every day. I created the monthly Thank You Notes post to help me relive the happy moments, savor the gratitude, and share them with you. I hope they also inspire you to think about what you have to be grateful for and share them with us.

Thank you Sweet Tooth Fairy

Red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting and heart-shaped candy.

…for this adorable and delicious red velvet cupcake. Looking at it made me smile. Eating it made me do the happy food dance I learned from my mother. Which reminds me…thank you Mom for teaching me to appreciate the small things in life, like good food.

Speaking of which…

Thank you fresh vegetables…

Homemade vegetable soup.

…for coming together to form this delicious, nutritious soup, reminding me that real food can taste just as good as decadent treats…well almost as good. Thank you to everything and everyone that made this meal possible: sunshine, soil, water, farmers, delivery drivers, grocery store workers, and everyone else in between that I failed to mention.

Thank you online grocery shopping…

…which resulted in my purchase of this larger than anticipated container of oatmeal, which motivated me to make homemade oatmeal cookies.

Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

I seem to be on a roll with the food theme this month. Maybe it’s time to change subjects…

Thank you Buddy Dog…

…for joining me for my morning free-write session. You are too cute for words. Thank you for coming into our family just over a year ago and making yourself right at home. Thank you Universe, Petfinder, and Celestial Zoo Pet Rescue for bringing you to us at just the right time.

And finally…

Thank you Tessa and Wells…

Eighteen year old man in Hawaii.

…just for being you…and happy birthday to you both! We couldn’t ask for better grandchildren. Thank you for all of the love, the laughter, and life lessons over the past 16 and 18 years (respectively).

  1. For me February was a good month overall. It was warmer than usual, thus less snow to shovel. I made a red velvet cake for the first time in years. I/we put together a cute jigsaw puzzle of cats, which was fun. And I discovered Wordle. What a month!

    1. I’m happy to hear you had a good month, Ally. Our weather has turned cold and snowy again, but that’s February in Utah! We need the moisture, for sure. I’ve never made a red velvet cake, but I like eating them, so maybe I should try. Welcome to Wordle. I’m loving the once a day brain test. It’s beat me twice, but most days I feel quite genius. ?

  2. What a lovely range of gratitudes 🙂

Mine are that my grandson turned 1, that my daughter and her family have all recovered well from Covid (for the second time) without any obvious issues, and that Himself & I are healthy(ish). Oh and that the storms of the weekend have gone, and that the sky is blue and the sun shining once more. It makes my daily walk so much more enjoyable.

    1. Congratulations on your son’s first birthday, Debs! I’m sorry to hear that your daughter’s family got COVID twice, but I’m glad they fared okay. I envy your blue sky. Right now our is gray and gloomy…not great for walking. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you, Donna. Buddy is the best. I was worried about the responsibility of taking in another dog, especially one we didn’t really know, but Buddy has been a delight and worth the accommodations dog parents must make.

  3. Hi! Ally Bean sent me. Love your dog’s name. So sweet. You don’t look old enough to have grandchildren who are 16 and 18.

It was wonderful to be able to visit my former neighbors last week in Colorado. She is elderly and caring for a son who survived a brain injury years ago. Her 57 yr old son passed away suddenly a few days before Christmas and we didn’t have enough time to catch up at the funeral.

I’m grateful that my daughter has an interview for a scholarship that could end in a full ride to college.

I’m trying to figure out if my husband and I can visit Budapest where our son is studying this semester. Coach’s work schedule is complicated and I’m tired of trying to sort it out.

    1. Hello Ernie and welcome! I will have to thank Ally for sending you my way…especially with that sweet compliment. I must confess it is probably time for a new photo. I had that one taken when I started my blog about six years ago. It’s not vanity so much as laziness that has kept me from updating it. I am so glad that you got to visit with your friends in Colorado. There’s no easy time to lose a child, but during the holidays must have difficulties all its own. I hope this was a joyful visit. Congratulations to your daughter on getting the interview. Sending positive energy her way that all goes well! And good luck on your trip to Budapest. Is your son loving the experience?

  4. I got my sugar fix today just from your two dessert photos! The red velvet cupcake looks so yummy and oatmeal cookies are my favorite (although I like them best with raisins). So far, so good for February, and I don’t expect that will change. We are getting some much-needed rain today which always makes me grateful.

    1. They really were both so good, Janis. My husband likes his oatmeal cookies with raisins as well, so I split the batch…half got raisins, half got chocolate chips. We are getting precipitation too…ours is just in the form of snow. I think you got the better deal!

  5. Thank you for stopping by my blog, and to Ally for bringing people together so well.

Your cupcake looks delicious, and your dog is adorable.

This February, I am grateful to have spent some time with my best friend, who lives 3,000 miles away. The reason was horrible, her mother died. But I am always glad to see her. Glad for continued good health, and the beautiful weather here in Northern California (though I would be MORE thankful for some much needed rain!). Grateful for possible opportunities coming our way…well, mostly my husband, but we’re a team, so any good thing for one is a good thing for all.

    1. Hello and welcome! Yes, thank you to Ally for bringing us together. I’m glad you could be there for, and with, your dear friend. It sounds as if you have much to be grateful for this month. Here’s to March and all the good things to come!

  6. Over from Ally’s. I too have accidentally ordered too much in my pick up order. Apparently, I don’t look closely enough at how many ounces are in a package or for words like Family Size. Oatmeal cookies are my favorite although I eat too much of the dough. February has been a difficult month so far, but my mother’s health appears to be better after a pacemaker replacement. I will continue to hope for better things.

    1. Hello Margaret and welcome! It’s so nice of Ally to bring us together. I’m glad I’m not the only one that misreads (or doesn’t read) the sizes when ordering online. I am sorry to hear about your challenges in February and your mother’s health. We are coping with my 94-year-old mother-in-laws health issues right now. It can be stressful. I will say, as far as her heart goes, she has done really well since getting a pacemaker almost 10 years ago. We haven’t had to replace it though. I hope that does the trick for your mother. Wishing you peace in March.
